While acute exacerbation of chronic hepatitis C worsened fibrosis and necroinflammation in patients, most later responded to interferon-based therapy in a recent study.

Researchers evaluated 82 patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC) who experienced acute exacerbation between January 2005 and June 2010 (cases) during a median follow-up of 36 months, along with 82 matched controls with HCV who did not experience reactivation. Follow-up of more than 2 years was performed in 69 cases.

Dietary, activity improvements benefited overweight, obese HCV patients
September 6, 2013

Patients with chronic hepatitis C who undertook low-fat or low-calorie diets and increased their physical activity experienced improvement to fibrosis, steatosis and insulin resistance in a recent study.

Researchers randomly assigned 120 sedentary patients aged older than 35 years with chronic hepatitis C (CHC) and BMI above 25 kg/m2 to a low-fat diet (LFD, n=60) or a normoglucidic low-calorie diet (NGLCD, n=60), in addition to 30 minutes of moderate physical activity 3 to 7 days a week. Anthropometric measurements were taken and nutrition counseling was provided at monthly follow-up visits, and biological re-evaluation was performed at 6 and 12 months.
