The Summit for the Elimination of Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C as Public Health Threats in the United States

CALL TO ACTION

Overview
In the face of recent developments in hepatitis C treatment, enhanced global solidarity for hepatitis B and hepatitis C elimination goals through the World Health Organization’s (WHO) recently-released Global Health Sector Strategy on Viral Hepatitis (2016-2021), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and its partners commissioned the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine to convene an expert committee on the topic. The committee worked in two phases. In the first report, released in April, 2016, it was determined that hepatitis B and C could be eliminated as public health problems in the United States. The second report, identifies new opportunities for preventing transmission and recommends action steps that will help ensure people are tested, treated, and/or cured of viral hepatitis, eliminating these infections as public health threats for the nation. The CDC Foundation will convene a public meeting for various stakeholders to discuss the report and their roles in implementing the committee’s recommendations.
