Disease-free survival after surgical treatment of hepatitis C-associated hepatocellular carcinoma was significantly influenced by occult or overt hepatitis B coinfection in a recent study.
Researchers evaluated liver tissue from 115 patients with HCV-associated hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) who underwent total surgical removal of tumors between July 1998 and August 2001 at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Linko, Taiwan. All tissue was collected from the noncancerous parts of the removed HCC.

No link between serious infections, nonselective beta blockers among cirrhosis patients

Patients with cirrhosis treated with nonselective beta blockers are no more likely than nonusers to develop serious infections, according to recent results.

In a retrospective cohort study, researchers evaluated 12,656 patients with compensated and 4,834 patients with decompensated cirrhosis.

Direct-acting antivirals reduce risk of premature mortality and liver cancer for people with chronic hepatitis C

These findings firmly counter those of a Cochrane review of direct-acting antiviral treatment trials that could neither confirm nor reject if direct-acting antivirals had an effect on long-term HCV-related morbidity and mortality. They also provide the best evidence to date to support guidance documents that recommend direct-acting antiviral treatment for all patients with chronic HCV infection.
