AASLD: Focus on Liver Broadens
Fatty liver disease expected to get lion's share of spotlight

BOSTON -- This year's edition of the Liver Meeting -- the annual meeting of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases -- will have a broader focus than in recent years, an organizer said.

"There's no over-arching theme," according to program committee co-chair Kimberly Ann Brown, MD, of the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit.

In recent years, the tidal wave of new treatments for hepatitis C (HCV) has been a central theme of the meeting but this year -- while HCV still has its time on stage -- an arguably greater health crisis will step into the spotlight, Brown told MedPage Today.

That crisis is the epidemic of fatty liver disease, which Brown says affects perhaps 122 million people in the U.S. or some 35% of the population and, in its advanced stages, increasingly is an indication for transplant.
