Updates Around The Web

Deaths from hepatitis C have reached an all-time high. That's according to a report released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The announcement also says the disease kills more Americans than any other infectious disease. Despite new treatments that can cure many cases of hepatitis C, the report shows 19,659 people died of it in 2014. One issue may be many people don't know they have hepatitis C so they don't seek treatment.
In this Mayo Clinic Minute, reporter Vivien Williams talks to infectious diseases specialist Dr. Stacey Rizza about new and effective treatments for hepatitis C.

The American Journal of Managed Care published a special issue focused on hepatitis C screening, treatment, and treatment access. The National Viral Hepatitis Roundtable (NVHR) Executive Director, Ryan Clary, published an opinion piece in this issue.
"It’s time for private insurers and Medicaid programs to give all Americans suffering from this devastating disease a chance at a cure."

FDA has revised a draft guidance-Chronic Hepatitis C Virus Infection: Developing Direct-Acting Antiviral Drugs for Treatment.
Significantly, FDA says it now expects sponsors of new HCV DAAs to conduct at least one head-to-head Phase III trial against an approved comparator. "Ideally … an active comparator in a Phase III, controlled trial should be an antiviral drug that is recommended for treatment of chronic HCV infection by authoritative scientific bodies based on clinical evidence that also reflects current practice," FDA writes.

Update: Upcoming and Recruiting Hepatitis C Clinical Trials
As a point of reference a few links have been provided offering interim results from ongoing hepatitis C clinical trials presented last month at The International Liver Congress 2016.  Both the articles and clinical trials have been indexed by pharmaceutical company.
