RESEARCH: Pioneering research carried out at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham is to be featured on a BBC Radio 4 programme on liver disease.
The Inside Health programme, which airs on 31 July, features work done by Birmingham Health Partners, a collaboration between the University of Birmingham and University Hospitals Birmingham Foundation Trust.
The programme features clinicians based at the hospital’s Liver biomedical research unit, and examined the effects and treatments of non alcoholic fatty liver disease.
The unit is currently undertaking the world’s largest randomised trial of stem cell treatment in patients with liver cirrhosis, led by Dr Philip Newsome.
Meanwhile professor David Mutimer is leading work on new treatments for hepatitis.
Other work underway at the unit will look at how the immune system can sometimes attack the liver, while researchers are also examining innovations in diagnosing liver disease and liver cancer.
