THE National Blood Transfusion Services of Zimbabwe has received various blood kits worth US$595 000 from the National Aids Council.

The consignment comprises Hepatitis B Reagents Kits (15x2000 test kits), HIV test kits (15x2000 kits), Hepatitis C Reagents kits (15x2000 kits), and syphilis reagents kits (60x500 kits).Officiating at the handover ceremony in Harare last Friday, Health and Child Welfare Minister Henry Madzorera, said the donation ensured that Zimbabwe maintained its standards in blood screening.

"This support is very strategic in that it seeks to ensure that our blood remains safe and that we maintain our record in transfusing safe blood."Ever since, we have never wavered in this effort and our record has remained without blemish," he saidMinister Madzorera said NAC set aside 50 percent of the Aids Levy to support the national ART programme and related interventions. He said the investment in the national response to HIV and Aids by NAC was very vital as it spurred Zimbabwe towards the universal access to HIV and Aids services in line with the World Aids campaign theme for 2009-2011.

Speaking at the same occasion, NAC board chairman Reverend Murombedzi Kuchera said preventing transmission was one of NAC’s priorities, as it was the national co-ordinator to the HIV and Aids response.
