Hepatitis C is considered to be a blood-borne virus – this means for transmission to occur there has to blood-to-blood contact. This occurs when the blood of one person enters the blood stream of another person through an opening or rupture in the skin, or rupture in the lining of the mouth, nose or anus etc. For HCV to be transmitted, infected blood needs to exit the body of one person and then directly enter into the blood stream of another person. Household transmission can occur through blood-to-blood contact, but is rare. The chance of a person contracting hepatitis C through contact with infected dried blood is low. According to the CDC the hepatitis C virus can survive on environmental surfaces outside the body at room temperature for at least 16 hours but no more than 4 days. "Statistically" if within this time frame and under specific conditions, dry blood that contains the hepatitis C virus can be a source of infection if there is blood-to-blood contact.

I recently found out a freind of mine has hepatits c. I slept in the same bed as her and in the morning I noticed some blood on the sheets from menstrual bleeding. I had some open cuts on my fingers is there any way I could've contracted hepatitis c by putting my hand on the bloodstain while I slept and can the virus move from the bloodstain or would it just be contagious on the exact spot of the blood stain.

At 3:08 on the video a slide purports that "Intercourse w/ infected person" puts people in a "high risk group" for transmission of hepatitis C. This is blatantly false as hepatitis C is not a STD and according to the CDC "the risk of transmission from sexual contact is believed to be low".

I was diagnosed with hep 'c' in 1997, I had an unfortunate exchange with a dr. plutka in abbotsford , he told me I had to pay him for filling out a form ,even though I thought he was being less than honest ,I paid the 35.00,but found I simply could not trust this dr. so I decided not to go through with treatment, that was in 2003. now I'm at the point of either I get treatment or I die. I walked into the hep 'c' clinic at Kelowna and said to the nurse Christine , "I'm done,I got nothing left cure me or kill me", well the 2 nurses that run this clinic have been treating me "better" than any other previous health care providers to date. I had lost 35 pounds needed a biopsy and had an ulcer and needed surgery to remove my gallblader. I also had to have my remaining teeth out ,now treatment starts in 13 days , I have geno 1. I'm looking forward to haveing a life , some days I'm so tired I stay in bed ,but its not as bad as it was when I first got sick ,I was 2 months in bed , my knees and hip just about always in pain ,so the side effects will certainly be no worse than what i'm already going through. I will be so happy to start this and even happier when I'm cured. Yes I know maby i'm being to optimistic ,keep in mind though i'm a pessimist at heart.

This trial was for non responders for 24 weeks. In some people milk thistle takes longer to work ( in the sense that they feel health benefits), also as non responders to interferon these people may be cirrhotic which is known for taking longer to feel benefits. Milk thistle will always be used by hep c sufferers as it is well known for its benefits. I think the pharmas should just provide a safe cure and stop trying to convince sufferers about herbs. The better question is "Has interferon got a future in hep c treatment", maybe the monopoly is being upset by sufferers taking milk thistle and waiting for safer treatment.

The standard treatment for all genotypes other then genotype 1 is pegylated
interferon and ribavirin. As you know, the standard in genotype 1 is boceprevir or telaprevir. The author did not make this clear in the article.
Unfortunately however, boceprevir or telaprevir are not pan-genotypic, and in genotype 1 patients not everyone clears the virus. The need for an all oral,effective and better tolerated agents regardless of genotype, genetic factors, or disease stage are desperately needed.
Today’s Standard of Care:
The current standard of care by genotype is listed below:
• Genotype 1: a combination of pegylated
interferon, ribavirin and an HCV protease
inhibitor (boceprevir or telaprevir). The
standard duration of treatment is a total of 24,
36 or 48 weeks.
o Pegylated interferon is a subcutaneous
injection—once weekly.
o Ribavirin is a pill. The dose is based on
body weight (1,000/1,2000mg) and divided
into two equal doses twice a day.
HCV protease inhibitor (boceprevir or
telaprevir) is taken every 7 to 9 hours with
food – boceprevir can be taken with a snack
or meal; telaprevir is taken with food that is
not low-fat.
• Genotypes 2 and 3: a combination of pegylated
interferon and ribavirin taken for 24 weeks.
o Pegylated interferon is a subcutaneous
injection—once weekly.
o Ribavirin is a pill. The dose is given 800mg
daily—dose is divided into two equal doses.
Ribavirin is taken with food.

The standard treatment for hepatitis C infection WAS with an interferon plus the antiviral drug ribavirin; not only does this unpleasant treatment last for many months, only around half of all those who are treated respond, leaving few options if it fails.

My son has used Spice, marketed in Columbus, Georgia, as "Darkness", numerous times in March to April 2012. His delusional thoughts and disorganization became pervasive, resulting in a psychotic break in the end of April. He has been hospitalized for 10 days, and counting, with the same behaviors described in the article. Improvement has been great but he isn't out of he woods yet.

I too have SOD after having my gallbladder removed. I cannot take any NSAIDS, antibiotics, or any pain medication (dilaudid, percocet, etc.)- they all cause attacks. Too much alcohol also causes attacks. Donnatal works to stop the spasms. Recommend trying if you haven't already.

I have had sphincter of oddi for 12 years. It cost me my job and many good things in life. I have been to the ER probably 100 times. I have had 2 major back surgeries without any pain medication. I have pain all day everyday. I have migraines and back pain and an autoimmune disorder. I cannot believe what this condition has done to so many of our lives. When I had my gallbladder removed 12 years ago, the attacks started within a week. Severe abdominal pain. I couldn't lay down, couldn't stand, couldn't walk. I always say its like your a fish out of water. I crawl on the floor bent over. Kneel with my head on the couch. It is the most horrific pain one can have. The back pain comes close but the sphincter of oddi is killer. After my surgery no doctor knew what was wrong with me. I would go to the er and they would give me morphine. Talk about suffer. It made the attacks worse. Any pain medication would make the attacks worse. Bentyl, aciphex and levsin will help if your lucky. And at times it takes more of them to help then you should take. The levsin can bother your heart if you have to take too many. NuLev was quicker acting buy of course they took it off the market. I've come to realize over the years that there are many people out there like me. One would think someone would come up with a medication we can take for pain. I literally can handle nothing but tylenol which does nothing for me. What happens if one of us need chemo. Will that cause attacks too. I would bet on it. It is a huge fear of mine as I have been taking my mom for her chemo for a long time now and wonder what happens if I would ever need it. There are a few things I have noticed in the articles I have read. I feel bad for all of you hear as I know the pain. One person says they can take a vicodin and another says they take percoset. These are two meds that cause serious attacks. I would check further to make sure that you indeed have SOD and not something else. These pain meds work my causing small spasms in the body thus reducing pain. These small spasms is what sets off the sphincter of oddi that is destroying our lives. I pray for a solution for all of us.
